Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) implementation of University policy on essential course costs.
The University’s commitment to covering essential course costs relates to all undergraduate students. The School covers the cost of everything that is an essential part of the programme, this will be clearly detailed in all programme information and in any verbal instructions given by tutors. Costs associated with sandwich/year abroad placements, such as travel and accommodation, are not covered by the School.

Equipment / materials / services
If equipment is essential for the student to complete the course, or any individual module on the course, then this is covered by the School. This includes:

  • Technical drawing equipment / board / specialist paper
All first year BSc students entering the School are provided with an A1 drawing board
  • Modelling materials
The School provides the necessary materials for basic models that are a required output for all students as specified in a project or unit brief issued to students at the start of the project/year. The School will not, normally, pay for materials where students choose individually to make a model.
  • Extensive or specialist printing
Where large-format plotting and colour printing are an essential part of the programme, the School will cover reasonable costs. If students exceed this, then they will be expected to pay for further printing/plotting at cost price (substantially lower than commercial rates).
  • Software access
The majority of software that students are expected to use is available at no cost on student licences. Where this is not possible, the software is available on the Schools networked computers.

Field trips, travel and other course expenses
If the activity is an essential part of the course, or any individual module on the course, then the basic course costs will be covered by the School. If it is not compulsory, it is not essential for the School to cover the cost. If it is essential for the student to undertake an activity (e.g. field work) but there is a variety of options available to the student at different cost levels then the School is only obliged to provide the least expensive option (or a contribution to equivalent to the least expensive option).

The School regards basic costs as travel and accommodation.
Where students are asked to make their own travel arrangements, they will be given a budget which would cover the cost of transport and accommodation. This budget would reflect the lowest price options available to the students (including advance purchase of tickets). Costs beyond this budget are to be met by the students.

The University considers that the following costs do not need to be covered by schools as they are either not essential or are basic costs that a student should be expected to cover themselves:

  • Laptop computers
  • Calculators
  • General stationery
  • Text books (assumed to be available in the library)
  • Basic copying / printing

If there are optional costs/fees to be covered by the student, these are not a requirement to pass the degree.

2.2 Postgraduate taught (PGT) programme costs
PGT fees should include all associated costs required to complete the programme including field trips, equipment, materials, bench fees or studio hire. Any optional fees should be stated in literature but it must be clear to the students that these are not required to pass the programme.
