New Directions in Urban Design
Wednesday, 30th August, 2017
Professor Aseem Inam, who joined the Welsh School of Architecture in April 2017 as Chair in Urban Design, has been invited to present his ideas on the future of urban design at a series of high profile international events this summer.
In June, Professor Inam was invited to chair the opening session of an international conference at the University of Cambridge on “Urbanism in the Global South: Building New Geographies of Development“. The session focused on urban theory and practice, deconstructing and reimagining urban change and transformation with examples of current practice and ideas for the future.
He gave a keynote speech on reclaiming urban practice for India at an international conference on the “Future of Cities: Opportunities and Challenges” in July, organised by the Institute of Town Planners India in Delhi.
Professor Inam also co-designed and co-led two practice-oriented workshops in the cities of Pune and Surat in August on the “Power of Design Concepts“, which suggested radically different ways of thinking about design practice in a rapidly and increasingly urbanising world. The workshops were well-attended by architects, designers and representatives from public authorities.
In addition to disseminating new ideas and ways of thinking in urban design on an international stage, Professor Inam has also been working with colleagues from the Welsh School of Architecture and the School of Geography and Planning at Cardiff University to take our jointly-run MA Urban Design programme in new and exciting directions.
