Launch of Education Seminar Series 2015/16

The College of Biomedical and Life Sciences is delighted to announce that it is launching a new Education Seminar Series for 2015-16 academic session.  This will aim to showcase examples of innovative practice across the University and will also bring in external speakers to share good practice from across the sector. Each seminar will focus on aspects of learning and teaching relevant to the enhancement of the student experience and to the achievement of the ambitious agenda set out in the University’s Way Forward Strategy.    The series will aim to be of interest to academic staff and also to administrative staff working to support and manage education provision within Schools in the College.

As a precursor to this launch we will be running a pilot workshop on Peer Review of Learning and Teaching in May of this academic session and if you are interested in presenting at this workshop then please get in touch with Emma Humphries (HumphriesE2@cardiff.ac.uk) at the College .

Ideas for future themes for the seminar series may include: Innovative mechanisms for feedback that engage students in learning; reflections on placements; inquiry-based learning and flipped classrooms; stakeholder involvement in the curriculum. However if you have an idea for a future seminar or workshop or have a link to a HEA subject area which may be of interest across the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences then do let us know (HumphriesE2@cardiff.ac.uk).

Nuffield Research Placements

Would you like to offer a sixth form student hands-on experience of a professional research environment through a 4 – 6 week placement in their summer holidays? Nuffield Research Placements (previously Nuffield Science Bursaries) provide over 1,000 students each year with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Nuffield Research Placements give sixth form students hands-on experience of a professional research environment through a 4 – 6 week placement in their summer holidays. The programme is run by the Nuffield Foundation and works through regional networks to link talented students with organisations undertaking research. They work with over 200 different organisations including universities, commercial companies, voluntary organisations and research institutes.

By working with professional researchers, students gain an insight into a wide variety of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers. By providing a placement, you can give someone a life-changing opportunity that will help transform them into a future scientist.

Getting the best out of our people

Following the roll-out of one-hour workshops across the College, the College HR team, in conjunction with Organisational Development, are delivering the following one-day courses to equip managers with the skills to manage performance effectively and get the best out of their teams.

Managing Performance can be easier said than done and it can be complex. It is all about using the tools available to raise the performance of the individual and the team. This includes everything from agreeing objectives that are achievable, setting behavioural expectations with employees, and then providing ongoing feedback, all of which will be covered on this one day programme.

Human Tissue

Do you use human tissue in research or teaching?

Oversight of all human tissue activity within the University has now moved to the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences. The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dylan Jones has taken on the role of Corporate Licence Holder Contact on the Human Tissue Act (HTA) licences and will oversee compliance with the HTA for all human tissue held within the University.

A brief self-assessment for compliance with HTA Standards will soon be required for all studies involving the collection, use or storage of human tissue, including studies with NHS ethical approval. Full details will be available shortly.

Welcome Trust Workshop

ContentMine Workshop at the Wellcome Trust

Dates: 13-14 April 2015

Content mining technologies hold much potential for maximising scientific discovery and the reuse of research through automatedly searching, indexing and analysing the scientific literature.

This workshop aims to educate and engage researchers who are interested in using mining technologies in the biomedical and life sciences. You will receive training in research methods and cutting edge technologies before applying these skills to team projects, which will be presented to invited funders and policy makers on the final afternoon. We additionally offer a unique opportunity to participate in a high-level policy discussion about the future of content mining for science and innovation in the UK.

Thanks to the generous support of the Wellcome Trust, this workshop is free but places are limited to 25.
