CUBRIC hosts four laboratories dedicated to state-of-the-art brain stimulation technology. Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) facilities include MR-compatible tES, multichannel tES, and waveform generation capabilities that allow novel tES protocols to be trialled and implemented. We use tES in a range of basic and applied settings, including studies of sensorimotor neurophysiology, perception, and cognitive control. We have also established methodological benchmarks and standard protocols for ensuring safe and reproducible applications of tES. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) facilities include multiple systems for repetitive and patterned offline protocols (including theta-burst stimulation), paired-pulse stimulation to measure GABAergic and glutamatergic neurophysiology, and specialised technology for concurrent TMS and 3T MRI. CUBRIC has been at the forefront of methodological advances in TMS and TMS-MRI, including a passive shim that nearly eliminates one major source of interference between the techniques.

In addition to brain stimulation technology, laboratories are equipped with the latest neuronavigation systems to permit targeting of TMS to specific cortical regions located within individual MRI scans. Extra facilities also include eye-tracking, EMG, and systems for presenting visual, auditory and somatosensory stimuli.
