“Girls Into Computing” Visit Days in colloboration with STEM Cymru Engineering Education Scheme Wales


Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics, in collaboration with STEM Cymru Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW STEM Cymru), has recently hosted a number of "Girls Into Computing" Visit Days to give girls a taste of the numerous careers and opportunities associated with computing. Year 8 and 9 pupils from a number of schools across Cardiff visited the Univeristy for the day, giving them the opportunity to meet with current female undergraduate and research students and take part in a number of hands-on interactive sessions with the aim of encouraging the pupils to choose STEM subjects at GCSE. Activities included an introduction to the Raspberry Pi using Python programming, a workshop using Greenfoot – a development environment to write simple programmes in Java, and decision making sessions using business processes and team building. Chemistry in the 3rd Dimension


Chemistry in the 3rd Dimension is an immersive 1 hour workshop most suitable for KS4 + KS5 students. An adapted shorter version is also available for KS3 students.
Our workshop begins with an introduction to computational chemistry – using computers to understand and predict chemical reactions, followed by a showcase of the wide variety of research being performed within the Chemistry Department at Cardiff University.
Students then don a pair of 3D glasses which allow them to ‘step inside’ a variety of chemical simulations where 3D is used to describe the properties of these systems.
Our requirements for this workshop are as follows:
1. Use of a darkened room (for example auditorium), and access to a power supply.
2. Use of a standard projector and whiteboard during the introduction talk.
3. A maximum of 100 students per workshop.

Community Learning

Community Learning is designed and run in partnership with local organisations and other learning providers. We respond to a variety of learning needs and local interests and therefore design new courses each year.

We run up to 40 FREE short courses each year, providing attractive and flexible learning opportunities designed to help support community-based students progress to the next stage, whether that is work, college or university.

Confident Futures Project


For looked after children and care leavers between the ages of 14 and 19, the Confident Futures Project combines group activities with individual support to raise aspirations and improve confidence. This will include social trips, university taster days and workshops to support studies and applications to university / college / jobs. As part of the project, the young people will also have access to university events such as GCSE /A level revision workshops and advice sessions to support Personal Education Plans and pathways. The project runs fortnightly from October – Easter.

Darwin Centre

The Darwin Centre for Biology and Medicine was founded in Cardiff by Professor Tony Campbell in 1993, moving to Pembrokeshire in 1999. It has evolved from a Biological and Medicine engagement platform through a week-long Science Engineering and Technology (SET) Festival, to its current format as a year-round engagement provider in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in its broadest sense.

Discovery Project


This project is for young people with ASD between the ages of 14 and 19 who have the potential to go on to university. Pupils on the scheme will be mentored by current university students, who give an insight into university life and help equip pupils who attend with skills needed for university life. This will be done through a combination of activities including workshops, academic taster sessions and social events. There will also be the opportunity for pupils to receive extra support for homework, revision, and making applications to college and university. Together, the young people and their mentors will plan out a calendar for the year ahead, combining events from the program of group sessions with individual activities (such as planning a meal and cooking together, going for a coffee, or attending open days). The project runs fortnightly from October – Easter. Pupils who attend the Discovery Project are also invited to a Summer School, held in July each year. Geophysics demonstration


Cardiff University School of Earth and Ocean Sciences' seismic demonstration shows how geophysics is used to look at the subsurface structure of the Earth, for example in the search for oil. The demonstration which takes place outdoors, e.g. on the school football pitch, can also be conducted during a visit to the University.

Inspiring Science Education (ISE)

The Inspiring Science Education project, funded by EU FP7, aims to motivate and stimulate teachers to attract youngsters to the world of scientific discoveries, natural and scientific phenomena and much more by providing them within their classrooms with access to the latest interactive tools and digital resources.

Learning software development skills using the XP Game


The XP Game is used by developers in industry to learn skills in Agile Development. Students are split into teams and are challenged to plan and estimate the time required to complete a set of tasks to try and earn points. The tasks involve sorting cards, blowing up balloons, making paper hats, throwing dice and complete mathematical challenges. The aim of the game is to develop skills in: team working, problem solving, planning and estimation.

Operational Research Ambassadors in Schools (ORAiS)


The School of Maths runs an annual partnership with the Operational Research Society during which Undergraduate students work with secondary schools observing lessons and acting as general Teaching Assistants. Through this partnership a set of teaching materials and student enrichment resources are created which incorporate Operational Research introducing and developing the discipline of Operational Research in schools.

Pharmacy School Visits

The School of Pharmacy offers school visits all based upon a range of themes and topics. These are suitable for a range of key stages and on a variety of subjects. For example, one was run for primary schools on the theme, 'Science and Medics', and through a series of hands-on experiments, they led the young pupils through concepts such as forces, pH, solubility, and blood circulation, as they pertain to medicines.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Loan Boxes


This A-level biology outreach activity provides state of the art equipment, set up guides and ready-made class worksheets that supports hands-on learning directly in the classroom. The loan boxes include a thermal cycler, Gilson pipettes and tips, gels and gel tanks, power supply, reagents as well as a PowerPoint presentations for teachers to use on a loan basis. This activity can usually be supported by a researcher and/or undergraduate students.

School of Architecture. Teaching support for Welsh Baccalaureate Challenges and Individual Project


The Welsh School of Architecture has developed a series of teaching and learning materials, focusing on introducing architecture that will assist in the delivery of each of the Welsh Baccalaureate Challenges, along with assisting in the development of the Individual Project. Five undergraduate students have been working towards this series of exciting lessons and materials to help teachers of the Welsh Baccalaureate successfully deliver the qualification.

Shape My Street Key Stage 2 National Competition


The SHAPE MY STREET competition is a key stage 2 activity that has been designed to introduce young learners to ideas about home, place and community ran by the Cardiff School of Architecture. Within structured, creative learning activities, classmates aged 7-11 will discuss which aspects of ‘home’ and ‘street’ make successful neighbourhoods. The competition activities are intended to develop understanding of the importance of design and quality in the built environment, and raise awareness of careers in design and related creative industries. SHARE with Schools: Museum Curatorship Workshop


A workshop combining the material collections of our Romans and Nineteenth Century workshops, which inspires pupils to create their own museum displays using our artefact collections and guided web research. Requires suitable access to PCs, and is an alternative to running the other activities. Can be used with various or mixed cohorts in KS3. We deliver this workshop in selected schools, working towards widening access to Higher Education.

Snot Shop: the biophysics of boogies


Snot Shop is an interactive activity to explain how the human respiratory system works and its key components. It explores how humans get lung infections and the body's defense mechanisms as well as how to recognise different lung diseases and symptoms. These activities also develop lab skills including how to use basic lab equipment and manual skills, analytical skills, following scientific procedures and how to use "controls" in a scientific experiment. It can be adapted to suit all year groups.

Stem Cells and their Ethics


This activity explains what stem cells are, their uses in therapies and basic research, and associated ethical issues. It is delivered in school by university students or staff. The activities explore what stem cells are and their uses; then discuss a choice of ethical issues including: 'Basic rights of an embryo when life starts', 'A comparison of using stem cells vs animal experimentation to test drugs' or 'Should the Government fund embryonic stem cell research?'

Step Up to University Programme


The Step Up to University Programme aims to raise aspirations, raise attainment and provide support for secondary-aged pupils from disadvantaged areas to continue their studies post 16. The programme is a core part of Cardiff University's Widening Participation Programme. It develops a two-year relationship with pupils in schools from which there have traditionally been low rates of progression to university.

Student Teaching Scheme


Cardiff University School of Modern Languages is supporting the teaching and learning of foreign languages in schools and colleges. The Student Teaching Scheme engages two sets of inter-linked learners: final year Modern Languages students at Cardiff University and secondary-school pupils learning foreign languages in regional schools. The University students receive practical and theoretical pedagogical training by University staff and external partners, then gain mentored teaching experience in the local schools. They observe teaching by professionals, support classroom activities and lead teaching sessions using new learning resources they generate themselves. Students also organise and run a languages study day in the University for year 9 pupils, to encourage them to continue with languages. The Exploring the Past Progression Pathway


The Exploring the Past pathway is an exciting and innovative route onto degrees in History, Archaeology and Religion at Cardiff University. It consists of a series of stimulating short modules taught in the evenings and at weekends, and these can be taken as part of the pathway itself or as standalone courses. The pathway is aimed primarily at adults returning to education. However individual courses have proved to be a great way for A-level or Access students to ensure a smooth transition to HE by getting a taste of what university study in these subjects is really like.

The Illustration Archive

The Illustration Archive is the world's largest searchable online database of historic book illustrations. The images span the eighteenth to the twentieth century and cover works of literature, history, geography, philosophy and science. The Archive can be searched in multiple ways, and provides full access to the books in which the images appeared. The illustrations are copyright free and can be tagged as well as searched. The 'In the Classroom' part of the site includes a guide for teachers on how these historic illustrations can be used in school projects.

Trio Sci Cymru


As part of the Trio Sci Cymru project, Cardiff University will deliver STEM engagement activities to KS3 students throughout the South Wales Valleys. Over a three-year period, pupils will have the opportunity to participate in three different programmes which take our cutting-edge research direct to the classroom. The first programme ‘Apothecary Bees’ will introduce pupils to the award-winning Pharmabees project. The second programme ‘Chemistry in the 3rd Dimension’ will use a portable 3D cinema to give pupils a chance to step inside a variety of chemical systems. The third programme ‘UniverseLab’ uses space to engage students with science, through a combination of 3D shows, virtual and augmented reality, robotic telescopes and hands-on workshops. Through these programmes we hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, and help to build Wales’s future STEM workforce. Uni Inspiration Day


This event is a day of activities for Year 11 pupils in South Wales who are thinking about Higher Education and may be unsure on what to study or what route they need to take after their GCSEs. Pupils will be introduced to a wide selection of different subjects they can study at university through taster sessions, talks and interactive activities. Previous workshops have included: Architecture, Art & Design, Biomedical Science, Business, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Food Science, Healthcare, Journalism & Media, Law, Medicine & Dentistry, Music, Performing Arts, Psychology, Social Science, Sport and Student Life. On the day we will also hold a subject fair with over 50 courses represented in an exhibition. Pupils will have the opportunity to speak to current university students and find out more about their courses, what they enjoy about university, and their career aspirations. Courses represented are from Cardiff University, Metropolitan University, and the University of South Wales. This event is funded by First Campus and the Higher Education Roadshow.

Universe in the Classroom

The Cardiff University School of Physics and Astronomy is reaching out to primary schools and communities across Wales, hoping to spark a curiosity about the Universe in young children. Universe in the Classroom is a new initiative funded by the Welsh Assembly National Science Academy that will provide improved teaching methods and innovative tools to modernise and enhance the way STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are taught to young children. The programme will train over 100 Welsh primary school teachers to use the new resources which include a 0.4-m robotic telescope, Universe in a Box educational toolkits and dozens of enquiry-based learning activities.

Welsh Bacc Global Citizenship Challenge: Evaluating the Evidence


Learning Outcome 1 of the Global Citizenship Challenge of the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate requires you to "be able to apply critical thinking and problem solving". This includes:
1. Identifying and selecting information on global issues from appropriate secondary sources
2. Considering a range of alternative opinions, views and arguments on a global issue in order to develop your own views

Cardiff University's Information Services have created a series of Plagiarism Learning Objects to help students understand what constitutes plagiarism and how to avoid committing plagiarism in their work. Welsh School of Architecture – Primary and Secondary School Workshops

The Welsh School of Architecture lead workshops in local primary and secondary schools. Since March 2018, members of staff have visit schools to teach workshops which give pupils an overview of architecture as a subject and profession. During the workshop, classes participate in activities such as creating their own model houses. We discuss the different aspects of housing design that architects need to think about (such as materials, adaptability, environment, transparency and function) and encourage pupils to think creatively.
