An introduction to coding in Java using Greenfoot

Students get the opportunity to use Greenfoot, which teaches object orientation with Java, in the surroundings of the School of Computer Science & Informatics' newly refurbished computer labs. Greenfoot is visual and interactive and allows you build your own environment or world to develop games, simulations, and other graphical programs. Greenfoot uses standard textual Java code providing a combination of programming experience in a traditional text-based language with visual execution. This workshop also offers the participants to meet and chat with current university students.

Bioaccumulation and food chains with the Otter Project

Whole lessons created by Cardiff University Otter Project can be found on the TES teaching resources page. These highlight the impacts that contaminants have on the UKs largest carnivore, whilst tying in with WJEC curriculum. Pupils are guided through the concepts of food chains and bioaccumulation in the context of real life and current research examples. The food chain lesson is aimed at a KS2/KS3 level and has differentiation for lower and higher ability incorporated within the lesson through both differentiation by task and support. There are two bioaccumulation lessons, one aimed at a KS3/ lower ability KS4 and the other which is aimed at higher ability KS3/ KS4. Also available are Literacy, Numeracy and thinking short activities for starters and plenaries. Developing vocabulary, Odd One Out, Source Square, Memory Graph and Cloze activity. All themed around otters and how they are at risk from pollution.
All resources have been developed in collaboration with a secondary school biology teacher. The PowerPoints run through the entire lesson, with separate supporting information for teachers.

Cancer Awareness Activity

This highly interactive and visual outreach activity is run by a team of School of Biosciences undergraduate facilitators . Each facilitator will run a 40-50 minute session with their own individual group of 6-8 pupils. This activity aims to demystify this complex disease, highlighting risk factors, why cancers form and how they can can spread through the body and existing and possible future treatments. This includes showcasing research from our European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute. This activity includes questions directly linked with either the Year 10 or Year 12 biology specification.

Cardiff Institute of Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER) – Brain Games

Brain Games is one of a number curriculum linked school engagement activities delivered in local schools by researcher. Brain Games is a range of activities specifically designed key stage 2 pupils, but readily adaptable to different levels all the way up to A' level. These sessions deliver taught elements alongside activities to show how the brain is made, how it communicates and some fun illustrations of what the brain can (or can’t) do. Activities include making brain hats, pipe cleaner neurons, the stroop race, the worlds one and only inflatable bouncy brain with information panels built in to learn while you bounce and bespoke brain puzzles to get your own grey matter going. Cells, Genes & Mutations

The School of Biosciences offers a day-long set of activities that explore understanding cells and mutations as well as discussions relating to the consequences of different lifestyle choices on generic mutation rates and hence risk of developing cancer. These activities are: a 15-20min activity to visualise your own cheek cells using microscopy (KS2 upward), an hour-long activity using DNA models (Y9 upward), and a 3-hour practical workshop in which pupils learn about the Polymerase Chain Reaction (Y9 upward – ideal for A level pupils). These activities can also be used as individual activities.

Dynamics of Cancer

The School of Biosciences provides a lesson for teachers that first introduces pupils to the topics of evolution and natural selection, before explaining how DNA mutation can give rise to cancer, and how evolution and natural selection of cancer cells can give rise to drug resistance and relapse in patients. The teaching pack contains the presentation, crib sheet and resources required for the lesson including dressing-up materials!

The School of Biosciences offers an interactive session designed to introduce pupils to the structure and function of sensory and motor neurones, synapses and neurotransmitters, action potentials and nerve conduction and sensory responses. It consists of a series of activities that are delivered by university staff: these include an introductory powerpoint presentation, make your own neurone, animations, Stroop test, EEG tests. There is a detailed instruction pack for teachers to run similar sessions afterwards.

Shape My Street Key Stage 2 National Competition

The SHAPE MY STREET competition is a key stage 2 activity that has been designed to introduce young learners to ideas about home, place and community ran by the Cardiff School of Architecture. Within structured, creative learning activities, classmates aged 7-11 will discuss which aspects of ‘home’ and ‘street’ make successful neighbourhoods. The competition activities are intended to develop understanding of the importance of design and quality in the built environment, and raise awareness of careers in design and related creative industries. Engineers are ordinary people doing some extraordinary things that help improve all our lives. At Cardiff University we work on a very diverse range of projects such as developing self-healing concrete, designing non-invasive glucose sensors for diabetics, analysing tidal power generators, studying impact damage in crash helmets, modelling brain movement during surgery. Get in touch if you would like an engineer to take part in a Skype Q&A session with your students, giving them an opportunity to see the curriculum in context and the wide range of careers that are opened up when you study maths and science.

Snot Shop: the biophysics of boogies

Snot Shop is an interactive activity to explain how the human respiratory system works and its key components. It explores how humans get lung infections and the body's defense mechanisms as well as how to recognise different lung diseases and symptoms. These activities also develop lab skills including how to use basic lab equipment and manual skills, analytical skills, following scientific procedures and how to use "controls" in a scientific experiment. It can be adapted to suit all year groups.

Welsh School of Architecture – Primary and Secondary School Workshops

The Welsh School of Architecture lead workshops in local primary and secondary schools. Since March 2018, members of staff have visit schools to teach workshops which give pupils an overview of architecture as a subject and profession. During the workshop, classes participate in activities such as creating their own model houses. We discuss the different aspects of housing design that architects need to think about (such as materials, adaptability, environment, transparency and function) and encourage pupils to think creatively.
