“Girls Into Computing” Visit Days in colloboration with STEM Cymru Engineering Education Scheme Wales


Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics, in collaboration with STEM Cymru Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW STEM Cymru), has recently hosted a number of "Girls Into Computing" Visit Days to give girls a taste of the numerous careers and opportunities associated with computing. Year 8 and 9 pupils from a number of schools across Cardiff visited the Univeristy for the day, giving them the opportunity to meet with current female undergraduate and research students and take part in a number of hands-on interactive sessions with the aim of encouraging the pupils to choose STEM subjects at GCSE. Activities included an introduction to the Raspberry Pi using Python programming, a workshop using Greenfoot – a development environment to write simple programmes in Java, and decision making sessions using business processes and team building. 3D Visualisation of Mantle Dynamics


The demonstration is delivered in the Helix visualisation suite in Cardiff University's School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Students will see the results of 3D modelling of mantle convection. This is an exciting opportunity to see heat flow patterns inside the Earth, how they influence volcanoes and affect the movement of plates on the surface. It shows students the need for interdisciplinary science (in this case Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Maths, Geology) to answer significant questions and is a dramatic example of a 'big' application of 'simple' Physics and Chemistry.

An introduction to coding in Java using Greenfoot


Students get the opportunity to use Greenfoot, which teaches object orientation with Java, in the surroundings of the School of Computer Science & Informatics' newly refurbished computer labs. Greenfoot is visual and interactive and allows you build your own environment or world to develop games, simulations, and other graphical programs. Greenfoot uses standard textual Java code providing a combination of programming experience in a traditional text-based language with visual execution. This workshop also offers the participants to meet and chat with current university students.

Cancer Awareness Activity


This highly interactive and visual outreach activity is run by a team of School of Biosciences undergraduate facilitators . Each facilitator will run a 40-50 minute session with their own individual group of 6-8 pupils. This activity aims to demystify this complex disease, highlighting risk factors, why cancers form and how they can can spread through the body and existing and possible future treatments. This includes showcasing research from our European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute. This activity includes questions directly linked with either the Year 10 or Year 12 biology specification.

Cardiff Business School Admissions Sessions for Schools and Colleges


Staff from Cardiff Business School offer to visit schools and colleges to run sessions with year 12 students to discuss pathways to university study. These sessions include a presentations on the value of university study and business-orientated degrees in particular, with brochures and employability handouts: they also include a Q & A to invite pupil's interest and queries.

Cardiff Institute of Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER) – Brain Games


Brain Games is one of a number curriculum linked school engagement activities delivered in local schools by researcher. Brain Games is a range of activities specifically designed key stage 2 pupils, but readily adaptable to different levels all the way up to A' level. These sessions deliver taught elements alongside activities to show how the brain is made, how it communicates and some fun illustrations of what the brain can (or can’t) do. Activities include making brain hats, pipe cleaner neurons, the stroop race, the worlds one and only inflatable bouncy brain with information panels built in to learn while you bounce and bespoke brain puzzles to get your own grey matter going. Cardiff Institute of Tissue Engineering and Repair – Maggot Racing

Foundation KS2

The Maggot Racing workshop aims to outline the clinical application of maggots in wound care and healing using a short poster presentation. Following the presentation students get the opportunity to take part in a fun and interactive maggot race. Each group names a maggot and encourages it towards the finish line. The owner of the winning maggot receives a certificate.

Chemistry Clock Race


Cardiff School of Chemistry postgraduate students can come to your school and run a workshop on indicators and chemical reaction. The aim of the session is to work out the right ratios to get an iodine clock reaction to change colour at a specified time. The session begins with a short introduction about indicators and finishing with a memorable and interactive demonstration in which students compete in the Clock Race challenge. Pairs of students mix two supplied solutions and watch for a colour change. They then dilute their solutions with the aim of achieving a predictable time delay before the colour change occurs. At the end of the workshop, the whole class takes part in a ‘Mexican wave’ of colour changes.

Chemistry Potions Workshop for Primary Schools


OUR POTIONS WORKSHOPS ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED FOR THE 2017/2018 SCHOOL YEAR. We will be releasing our presentations and workshops during the Autumn term. Please check back at a later date for further information.

Our ‘Potions’ workshop is most suitable for year 5 and 6 pupils. Our workshop begins by introducing students to chemistry and it’s prevalence in everyday life. Students then conduct their own experiments using an indicator to test acidity of a variety of goods found around the home and kitchen.
Students record their data in a table which is discussed as a class during the results section.
Our workshop is delivered by undergraduate and postgraduate students along with members of staff. The workshop concludes with an “ask a scientist anything” section. The workshop takes approximately 1 hr and 15 minutes.

Our requirements for this workshop are as follows:
1. A teacher be present at all times.
2. Access to the classroom sink during the entirety of the workshop.
3. Use of the projector for the introduction talk.
4. A maximum of 35 students per class.

Computer Science is as easy as Pi, Rasperry Pi


This workshop offers a hands on introduction to the Raspberry Pi and Python. From 'How do I switch it on' to 'programming your own minecraft world in Python' or 'Having fun with LED's and circuits'. This workshop can take place in your school or you can visit Cardiff University and combine this activity with one of our talks or meet the students events (numbers are limited).

Confident Futures Project


For looked after children and care leavers between the ages of 14 and 19, the Confident Futures Project combines group activities with individual support to raise aspirations and improve confidence. This will include social trips, university taster days and workshops to support studies and applications to university / college / jobs. As part of the project, the young people will also have access to university events such as GCSE /A level revision workshops and advice sessions to support Personal Education Plans and pathways. The project runs fortnightly from October – Easter.

Darwin Centre

The Darwin Centre for Biology and Medicine was founded in Cardiff by Professor Tony Campbell in 1993, moving to Pembrokeshire in 1999. It has evolved from a Biological and Medicine engagement platform through a week-long Science Engineering and Technology (SET) Festival, to its current format as a year-round engagement provider in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in its broadest sense.

Geophysics demonstration


Cardiff University School of Earth and Ocean Sciences' seismic demonstration shows how geophysics is used to look at the subsurface structure of the Earth, for example in the search for oil. The demonstration which takes place outdoors, e.g. on the school football pitch, can also be conducted during a visit to the University.

Learning software development skills using the XP Game


The XP Game is used by developers in industry to learn skills in Agile Development. Students are split into teams and are challenged to plan and estimate the time required to complete a set of tasks to try and earn points. The tasks involve sorting cards, blowing up balloons, making paper hats, throwing dice and complete mathematical challenges. The aim of the game is to develop skills in: team working, problem solving, planning and estimation.

Multiwavelength Astronomy


Explore the Electromagnetic Spectrum using images from astronomy from the radio to gamma ray. The main activity is a quiz involving matching up objects seen at different wavelengths. As optional extras, students can study one object in more detail through their own research and design a poster explaining the object.

Teacher resources (ppt) are available to explain the different regions of the spectrum in an astronomical context and can also cover themes such as black-body radiation (generally for 16-19 only). The main activity generally takes about 20-30 minutes to complete, and so fits nicely into a single lesson, although it can be expanded to a double lesson. It is also applicable for science clubs.

The activity uses Herschel Space Observatory as a case study to explain observations at other wavelengths.

Session is generally given by a researcher to a class or CPD teacher training session, so it can be given in person at later times by the teacher(s) in the classroom environment.

Pharmacy School Visits

The School of Pharmacy offers school visits all based upon a range of themes and topics. These are suitable for a range of key stages and on a variety of subjects. For example, one was run for primary schools on the theme, 'Science and Medics', and through a series of hands-on experiments, they led the young pupils through concepts such as forces, pH, solubility, and blood circulation, as they pertain to medicines.

Routes into Languages Cymru


Routes into Languages Cymru is a pan-Wales project that aims to improve the uptake of modern languages in schools. Funded by five Welsh universities and other institutions, and with two operational hubs in Cardiff University and Bangor University, Routes Cymru coordinates a number of events for language learners from year 7 to year 13. Routes Cymru’s flagship activities include:

*Student Ambassadors – Routes Cymru Student Ambasadors support outreach events and offer a variety of activities including school careers talks, language taster sessions and support careers fairs/open days.

*Lingomap – LingoMap is the successor to the award-winning ‘Adopt a Class’ scheme, redesigned to make use of new technologies and aim to reach a wider classroom audience across Wales. Follow our Language Ambassadors around the globe as they embark on their third year abroad. Tasked with writing blogs on specific topics from the GCSE exam specification, the students share personal highlights and cultural flavours from across Europe and beyond. LingoMap also provides a visual and interactive platform to show pupils the global opportunities available to them through studying languages. For further details please go to

*Film Masterclasses – Covering films on the A-level curriculum for French, Spanish and German, students have the opportunity to participate in an interactive seminar with a member of our academic staff. This not only benefits the student academically, but it also gives them a real idea about how exciting and interesting it is studying languages at Cardiff University. This film season will take place during the Spring Term.

*National Spelling Bee Competition – This annual event is designed to support students in year 7 who are studying French, German, Spanish and Welsh Second Language. The competition enables pupils to improve their spelling and vocabulary, encourages correct pronunciation and most importantly raises confidence levels. The competition culminated in the Spelling Bee National Final at the end of the summer term.

Offering tailored talks, one-to-one advice at HE fairs across the UK, information sessions and teachers’ conferences, the Undergraduate Recruitment team provide a range of free activities and resources both on and off campus to support those considering university. The fairs we attend and talks we give are applicable to all subjects and courses across the university and will make a good starting point for many teachers and careers advisers.

Shape My Street Key Stage 2 National Competition


The SHAPE MY STREET competition is a key stage 2 activity that has been designed to introduce young learners to ideas about home, place and community ran by the Cardiff School of Architecture. Within structured, creative learning activities, classmates aged 7-11 will discuss which aspects of ‘home’ and ‘street’ make successful neighbourhoods. The competition activities are intended to develop understanding of the importance of design and quality in the built environment, and raise awareness of careers in design and related creative industries. SHARE with Schools: Life in the Nineteenth Century Workshop


An introduction to aspects of local industrial, domestic and social history in the South Wales and Valleys area. We use presentations, discussion, images and aerial photography in this workshop, as well as offering guided object handling, giving pupils the opportunity to interact with genuine domestic and industrial artefacts from the time. We deliver this workshop in selected schools, working towards widening access to Higher Education.

SHARE with Schools: Museum Curatorship Workshop


A workshop combining the material collections of our Romans and Nineteenth Century workshops, which inspires pupils to create their own museum displays using our artefact collections and guided web research. Requires suitable access to PCs, and is an alternative to running the other activities. Can be used with various or mixed cohorts in KS3. We deliver this workshop in selected schools, working towards widening access to Higher Education.

SHARE with Schools: Romans in Wales Workshop


An introduction to how the Romans came to be in the place we now call Wales and their impact on it. In this workshop we use presentations, creative exercises, and quizzes. We also do guided object handling, giving pupils the opportunity to handle a mix of replica and genuine two thousand-year old archaeological artefacts.

SHARE with Schools: STEM Archaeology Workshop


This workshop links the Humanities and Science (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in a fun and interactive way. We want to show that Science is not constrained to the traditional subjects and that Archaeology is more than just artefacts and mud. Features a mix of learning methods, including presentations and object handling. This workshop is aimed at Year 9 pupils in KS3 in selected schools, working towards widening access to Higher Education.

Stem Cells and their Ethics


This activity explains what stem cells are, their uses in therapies and basic research, and associated ethical issues. It is delivered in school by university students or staff. The activities explore what stem cells are and their uses; then discuss a choice of ethical issues including: 'Basic rights of an embryo when life starts', 'A comparison of using stem cells vs animal experimentation to test drugs' or 'Should the Government fund embryonic stem cell research?'

Transcription and Translation


The School of Biosciences offers a one-hour activity using DNA models to illustrate the processes of transcription and translation. It introduces the concept of DNA mutation and the consequences this can have on gene function. Additionally the activity will have an associated cancer research context featuring researchers and real-life data to be analysed (extension activity).

Trio Sci Cymru


As part of the Trio Sci Cymru project, Cardiff University will deliver STEM engagement activities to KS3 students throughout the South Wales Valleys. Over a three-year period, pupils will have the opportunity to participate in three different programmes which take our cutting-edge research direct to the classroom. The first programme ‘Apothecary Bees’ will introduce pupils to the award-winning Pharmabees project. The second programme ‘Chemistry in the 3rd Dimension’ will use a portable 3D cinema to give pupils a chance to step inside a variety of chemical systems. The third programme ‘UniverseLab’ uses space to engage students with science, through a combination of 3D shows, virtual and augmented reality, robotic telescopes and hands-on workshops. Through these programmes we hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, and help to build Wales’s future STEM workforce. Uni Inspiration Day


This event is a day of activities for Year 11 pupils in South Wales who are thinking about Higher Education and may be unsure on what to study or what route they need to take after their GCSEs. Pupils will be introduced to a wide selection of different subjects they can study at university through taster sessions, talks and interactive activities. Previous workshops have included: Architecture, Art & Design, Biomedical Science, Business, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Food Science, Healthcare, Journalism & Media, Law, Medicine & Dentistry, Music, Performing Arts, Psychology, Social Science, Sport and Student Life. On the day we will also hold a subject fair with over 50 courses represented in an exhibition. Pupils will have the opportunity to speak to current university students and find out more about their courses, what they enjoy about university, and their career aspirations. Courses represented are from Cardiff University, Metropolitan University, and the University of South Wales. This event is funded by First Campus and the Higher Education Roadshow.

Welsh School of Architecture – Primary and Secondary School Workshops

The Welsh School of Architecture lead workshops in local primary and secondary schools. Since March 2018, members of staff have visit schools to teach workshops which give pupils an overview of architecture as a subject and profession. During the workshop, classes participate in activities such as creating their own model houses. We discuss the different aspects of housing design that architects need to think about (such as materials, adaptability, environment, transparency and function) and encourage pupils to think creatively.
