Taking Children’s Literature Seriously

19:00 - 21:00
Main Building

Why is children’s literature not taken seriously within literary culture? In this talk, author and academic Catherine Butler will explore how children’s literature is perceived by adult readers, arguing that the marginalization of children’s literature is motivated not by considerations of quality but by a pervasive ambivalence amongst adults regarding children and childhood themselves. This updated and revised version of a talk commissioned by the Society of Authors will appeal to readers and writers with an interest in children’s books.
