BookTalk: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
18/02/2014, 18:30 - 20:30
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, probably best known for the 1975 film starring Jack Nicholas and winner of 5 academy awards, was published in 1962 and adapted into a play in 1963. Set in Oregon Psychiatric hospital, the novel is based on Kasey’s experience in mental health institutions and his interest in perception altering drugs. Narrated by Chief Bromden, the novel follows the arrival of Randle and the dramatic impact he has on the other patients. Through the dramatic clash between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched the narrative explores the nature of individuality, conformity, and rebellion.
We’ll be joined by experts on mental illness, the history of psychiatry and power dynamics in healthcare settings. As always, following the talks we will open up for a lively Q&A about the book.
Cardiff BookTalk is book group with a difference, where experts explore the big themes in great literature and engage in a lively discussion. Join us for a drink as we discuss what made One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest a best seller and an award-winning film.
