Getting research into policy: case studies
03/07/2014, 17:30 - 19:30
Dr Havard Prosser, Senior Research Associate, Cardiff School of Biosciences and former Chief Environmental Science Advisor, Welsh Government
In an ideal world, it is assumed that policy is based on evidence – whether from research or statistical studies. In practice, the impacts of research are also dependent on the receptivity of the politicians in Government, the timing of research studies and the influence of pressure groups.
Individual research studies often have little impact but form part of an overall body of evidence which is sufficiently consistent and persuasive to instigate a new policy or change to existing policy. Expert panels are often set up by Governments to review research studies and provide recommendations.
This seminar will explore specific environmental case studies, including strategies on waste, climate change and energy.
