Bette’s story – A post-war childhood, life in a drag commune, the creation of the Gay Liberation Front, the formation of the ground-breaking Bloolips company & more.
The 70s Gay Liberation Front could mobilise 30,000 people to march the streets of London. Bette, the driving force behind the movement had propelled the organisation from a few dozen members who attended its first meetings at the LSE into an organizing force.
Bette’s theatrical career moved from straight performances of Shakespeare & Marlowe with Sir Ian McKellan or playing East End hard men in Z-Cars, to high-camp drag with the Hot Peaches and a triumphant portrayal of his friend, Quentin Crisp.
Bette was instrumental in using drag to confront and shatter not only the establishment view of gay life but also gay men’s own views of their lives and sexuality.
The film showing is not available with subtitles or audio description. If you have any other accessibility needs, please contact us.
