The Changing Nature of Low Income Settlements in Asia: The Case of Karachi

03/06/2014, 17:30 - 20:00

Most NGOs and related practitioners work on the upgrading of informal settlements or on the prevention of evictions. Meanwhile, new housing, very different from the old informal settlements is being created.

This is because it is becoming increasingly difficult to create new informal settlements except very far from the city where transport costs, commuting time, and related social issues make living unaffordable and conflict ridden. Different cities have reacted differently to overcome this problem.

The talk, through a multimedia presentation, will focus on how the informal land and housing market and different transport solutions in Karachi have reacted to this problem and to its social, environment and political related repercussions.
