The Power of Fairtrade: ethical development in the wine industry

19/09/2017, 17:00 - 20:00

Free

With Fairtrade in the news recently with high-profile withdrawals from corporations such as Cadbury’s and Sainsbury’s, it is timely to reflect on exactly what impact Fairtrade is having on its producers. In this event Dr Agatha Herman (School of Geography and Planning) will discuss some of the key findings from her Leverhulme Trust and British Council funded research, which has been focusing on Fairtrade’s development impacts within and beyond its producer communities. Drawing on extensive fieldwork from across South Africa, Argentina, Chile and Northern Europe, she will focus on experiences from the wine industry. She will be joined by an expert panel including Fairtrade Wales and Dr Anne Tallontire, University of Leeds (other participants TBC) who will help to critically reflect on what this means for Fairtrade and its stakeholders. This will be followed by a wine reception and photographic exhibition of pictures taken by workers in South Africa, Argentina and Chile who were asked to show what Fairtrade meant to them in their daily lives.

Registration – 5 – 5.30pm
Event start – 5.30pm
Wine reception and photographic exhibition – 7-8pm

*This event will be delivered through the medium of English.

Mae Masnach Deg wedi cael cryn sylw yn y newyddion yn ddiweddar yn dilyn eu penderfyniad i ddod â’u partneriaeth gyda Cadbury’s a Sainsbury’s i ben. Felly, mae’n adeg briodol i fyfyrio ar ba effaith y mae Masnach Deg yn ei chael ar ei chynhyrchwyr. Yn y digwyddiad hwn bydd Dr Agatha Herman (Ysgol Daearyddiaeth a Chynllunio) yn trafod rhai o’r prif ganfyddiadau yn ei hymchwil a ariannwyd gan Ymddiriedolaeth Leverhulme a’r Cyngor Prydeinig. Roedd ei hymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar effeithiau datblygu Masnach Deg ar ei chynhyrchwyr a thu hwnt. Gan gyfeirio at waith maes helaeth ar draws De Affrica, yr Ariannin, Chile a Gogledd Ewrop, bydd yn canolbwyntio ar brofiadau yn y diwydiant gwin. Bydd panel o arbenigwyr gan gynnwys Masnach Deg Cymru (ac eraill i’w cadarnhau) yn ymuno â hi wrth ystyried beth mae hyn yn ei olygu i Fasnach Deg a’i rhanddeiliaid. Ar ôl y drafodaeth, cynhelir derbyniad gwin ac arddangosfa o ffotograffau a dynnwyd gan weithwyr yn Ne Affrica, yr Ariannin a Chile pan ofynnwyd iddynt beth mae Masnach Deg yn golygu iddynt yn eu bywydau bob dydd.
