    I studied sciences at Cambridge, medicine in Birmingham and psychiatry and genetics in Birmingham, Cardiff and St Louis.

    I specialise in, and lead research into, diagnosis and management of mood and psychotic illness. I head Wales’ National Centre for Mental Health, am an elected Officer of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Past President of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics.

    I am editorials editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry. I have published over 350 scientific papers, am Scientific Advisor to Bipolar UK, and advised BBC Eastenders on their bipolar storyline.

  • Professor Sir Mansel Aylward CB DSC FFPM FFOM FFPH FRCP

    I am Director of the Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research and Professor of Public Health Education in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University.

    I am also Chair of Public Health Wales – a new unified NHS Trust responsible for the delivery of public health services at national, local and community level in Wales. Until 2008 I was Chair of the Wales Centre for Health, the ‘hub of connected organisations’ to communicate better health messages to the people of Wales.

    During the 60th year of the NHS, the Minister for Health and Social Services asked me to chair the Bevan Commission, an independent expert group to oversee NHS reforms and, to help ensure that these reforms set Wales on the path to achieve a world-class health care system.

    I am Patron of The Shaw Trust, the Vocational Rehabilitation Association and Wellbeing Wales and Vice President of the College of Occupational Therapy.

    From 1996 to April 2005 I was Chief Medical Adviser, Medical Director and Chief Scientist to the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions and Chief Medical Adviser and Head of Profession at the Veterans' Agency, Ministry of Defence.
