    I studied sciences at Cambridge, medicine in Birmingham and psychiatry and genetics in Birmingham, Cardiff and St Louis.

    I specialise in, and lead research into, diagnosis and management of mood and psychotic illness. I head Wales’ National Centre for Mental Health, am an elected Officer of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Past President of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics.

    I am editorials editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry. I have published over 350 scientific papers, am Scientific Advisor to Bipolar UK, and advised BBC Eastenders on their bipolar storyline.

  • Dr James Walters

    I am an academic psychiatrist whose clinical and research work centre on psychosis and schizophrenia.

    My research seeks to find the genetic, biological and environmental underpinnings of these conditions. I have a particular interest in investigating the nature and basis of cognitive functioning in psychosis.

    I am also interested in finding out why around a third of people do not improve on conventional treatments and to improve treatments for this group of individuals.

  • Professor Mike Kerr

    I studied medicine in Bristol (UK), General Practice in York and Psychiatry in Cardiff.

    I came to Wales in 1990 and my clinical practice is in the epilepsies associated with learning disability and in the assessment and treatment of epilepsy and psychiatric disorder.

    I have been closely associated with initiatives in improving the public health of people with an intellectual disability including developing the Cardiff Health Check, which is used across England and Wales.

    Academically I have published widely on healthcare, epilepsy and intellectual disability and held research grants from many funding bodies.

    I am chair of the Advisory Board for Wales of Epilepsy Action, a trustee of Epilepsy Research UK and a medical advisor for the Rett Society and Epilepsy Bereaved. I am a member of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) commission on neuropsychiatric aspects of epilepsy and an editor of the Cochrane collaboration epilepsy group.

    I am a clinical academic and consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist.

    My research and clinical interests relate to bipolar disorder and in particular the relationship of mood disorders to childbirth.

    I am Chair of the national charity Action on Postpartum Psychosis. I also am Director of Public Engagement for the MRC centre in Cardiff and lead an innovative programme of work in this area.
