  • Dr Edward Gomez

I am education director for Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT). The global education hub for LCOGT is based in Cardiff University where I am an honourary lecturer/adjunct faculty in the School of Physics and Astronomy. One of the enjoyably parts of this position is supervising BSc. and MPhys. level undergraduate projects. This year I had 4 project students investigating extrasolar planets. I am very proud that 2 of my former project students have gone on to do PhDs. In addition, I am part of the Schools Engagement Team here and assist with the outreach of the University. We have recently been awarded funding by the Welsh Government's National Science Academy to run the programme Universe in the Classroom, inspiring children and teachers with Universe in a Box kits and stellar role models, across Wales. Universe in the Classrom is run in partnership with the international project Universe Awareness. I co-chair the IAU task force for children and schools, under the guidance of the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD). Our aim is to help people in astronomically developing countries to engage with and inspire children and teachers.

  • Mr Matthew Allen

I am an Astronomy researcher at Cardiff University in the field of Galaxies. I have previously worked for the European Space Agency and have good knowledge in many of their missions and the organisation as a whole. I have detailed knowledge of the mission Gaia which I directly worked on. I create videos for my YouTube channel (youtube.com/UKAstroNut) in which I explain different topics within astronomy and general science at a basic understandable level. I am confident and happy to talk about almost any area of astronomy.

  • Dr Rhodri Evans

I have over 20 years of lecturing experience, including in the United States and here in Wales at Glamorgan University and Cardiff University. I have done a lot of media work, as a Welsh speaker I have become the "default" person BBC Radio Cymru and S4C ask about astronomy and physics. I have a broad range of expertise as I have taught courses in nearly all areas of astronomy.

  • Dr Haley Gomez

I'm a senior lecturer in astrophysics and study cosmic dust using specially-designed infrared telescopes able to reveal the cool universe.

I am also head of public engagement for the School of Physics and Astronomy, and believe passionately in using astronomy to raise the aspirations of school children in Wales and the UK.

I am also a member of the Science and Technology Facilities Women in SET council and the Education and Training Committee.

  • Professor Bangalore Sathyaprakash

I am the head of the Gravitational Physics group at Cardiff. For the past 15 years, my research has focussed on studying astronomical sources of gravitational radiation and searching for them using kilometre-sized interferometric detectors.

We have so far not been successful but expect to see a breakthrough when detectors that are currently being upgraded begin operating in 2015.

I was the chair of an international group that built the science case for the construction of a billion-dollar underground gravitational-wave detector called the Einstein Telescope (ET). I very much hope that we will soon open the gravitational window for observing the Universe, after which I will work on getting ET funded and built over the next 15 years.

ET will be a remarkable instrument capable of observing colliding neutron stars and black holes when the Universe was in its infancy assembling its first galaxies.
