Learning technologies

The University’s Turnitin plagiarism-detection software includes a feature called GradeMark, which allows instructors to mark and comment on students’ work in a secure digital environment. After student marks have been posted by the instructor, students can access GradeMark to review comments and print or save a copy of the graded files.

In Learning Central, there are facilities to set and assess multiple choice quizzes within a module of study. The Library Service has used these to create the quiz which accompanies the ‘Welcome to the Library’ module, introducing students to library services at Cardiff. The quiz gives them an opportunity to review and consolidate what they’ve learnt. Subject Librarians can embed the content from the Welcome to the Library module – including the quiz – into other modules within the Schools they support. Guidance materials for embedding and using the online induction quiz are available (Cardiff University login required).

For a general introduction to GradeMark and Turnitin, you can enrol on a dedicated module within Learning Central. Log in at https://learningcentral.cf.ac.uk and look for the ‘Staff Learning Central Induction / Refresher’ portlet on the home page. Here you can self-enrol on a training / refresher module covering all the basic aspects of the use of Learning Central.

As with all assessment-related matters, be sure to discuss with your School before embarking on any assessments using Learning Technologies.

In the next section we discuss giving feedback to students on assessments they have undertaken.
