Why do over 30,000 students apply to Cardiff University each year? This session will provide information about the new student facilities at Cardiff, what life in the capital city of Wales is really like and how our graduates can look forward to one of the highest graduate employment rates in the UK. The talk will also explore the range, quality and cost of residences on offer at Cardiff and the support services available. There will be the opportunity for visiting students and parents to ask questions to a panel of current students at the end of the presentation.

What are tuition fees, maintenance loans, grants, bursaries and scholarships? How and when do you apply, and what are the extra sources of money that are available? This is an interactive workshop using audience participation devices designed to answer these questions. We will also take a practical look at a typical student budget and survival tips to help you manage your budget. This talk is for undergraduate courses including entrants to Medicine and Dentistry.

Why not take a walking tour with one of our student guides for a more general feel of the University and its environment? There will be plenty of time to ask questions and it’s the ideal way to find out more about the academic and social facilities in different areas of the University campus. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and the last tour will depart at 14:45.

Museum Avenue

If you are new to the city of Cardiff, why not take a coach tour of the city centre and its sights? You will see Cardiff’s magnificent civic buildings (of which the University is a key part), Cardiff Castle, the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Bay. Each tour lasts approximately 50 minutes. Please note that these tours can be extremely busy, so visitors should arrive in plenty of time to avoid disappointment.

This site contains a modern Fitness Suite which includes a range of cardio machines, resistance machines and free weights. There are also three glass-backed squash courts offering the chance for students based on the Cathays Campus to keep active throughout the day.

Cardiff University Strength and Conditioning Centre - Park Place

This centre incorporates a full range of Olympic-based and functional training equipment in addition to a spin studio, a fitness studio and a wellbeing clinic. This centre is regularly used by International Rugby Squads when preparing for fixtures against Wales.

The University’s main Sports Centre, offering a wide range of facilities for club and individual use. These include sports halls, a fitness suite, indoor cricket wickets, tennis courts, grass pitches and flood-lit artificial pitches.

Chaplaincy Drop-In Cafe

The chaplains, representing the main Christian denominations and acting as contact points for all world religions, will be on hand to answer questions about religious communities in Cardiff and University life in general. Open throughout the day for tea, coffee and informal advice.

Cardiff University Students’ Union: Get Involved, Love Cardiff!

Students Union

When you enrol at Cardiff University, you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union. Housed in its own purpose-built building, the Students’ Union exists to help students enjoy their time in Cardiff. Whether you’re looking for advice, training, a job, accommodation or want to join one of the 150 societies or 60 sports clubs, the Students’ Union is here to help. The Students’ Union is always buzzing with activity, with cafés, a pub, a nightclub, a nationally renowned live music venue and other venues that host a variety of student nights including comedy, theatre and cinema. Tours: current students will be giving guided tours around the Union building and will be delighted to answer your questions about the Union and its facilities.

Mature Student?

A drop-in session for those considering undergraduate study is available throughout the day with information tailored for mature students. This includes the opportunity to ask questions of current mature students and meet others in a similar situation.

Student Finance and Support

Staff from the Student Support Centre will be on hand to give advice on surviving student life. You can get expert guidance on queries about fees, grants and loans, provision for students with a disability, medical condition, specific learning difficulty, or any other student support issues. In addition, Cardiff University is committed to providing support for students from care and those leaving care who want to go on to higher education. Visit the Student Support stand throughout the day for further information and to meet our dedicated contact for care leavers.

The Heath Park Campus is home to five of the University’s academic schools including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery and Healthcare Studies. Erasmus is a scheme in which Cardiff students can study or work abroad at our partner institutions in Europe. Cardiff University has exchange partners across 27 EU countries through the Erasmus programme. There are also opportunities to study at some of the world’s top-ranked international universities in countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia. Staff will be on hand to provide information about these programmes, including issues such as fees and funding and to advise international students about applying to Cardiff University.

If you would like to find out more about the University, our halls of residence and the city, don’t just take our word for it - watch our student-led films being shown throughout the day. Our films include “Living in Cardiff University residences” a ten minute film that will take you on a tour of all the university residences. “A Cardiff Education” a four minute film showing you some of Cardiff University’s excellent study facilities from a student point of view and “Cardiff: The City” in which you can see the city through the eyes of some of our students.

Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning, Part-time and flexible study

The Centre runs over 400 part-time accredited courses in the evenings and during the daytime. Reduced course fees are available for full-time students. The Centre has also developed ‘Pathways’ to undergraduate degrees at Cardiff University. If you study as an undergraduate at Cardiff University, you may be able to take free-standing modules (including a wide choice of languages) as part of your degree. The Centre offers a range of free-standing modules that can help you to improve your career prospects or widen your range of skills and knowledge (check first that your degree programme permits you to take free-standing modules as part of your programme of study).

Getting here

We strongly recommend travelling by public transport or using the Park and Ride as parking on campus is extremely limited.

By train

Destination: Cathays train station

Visitors should change at Cardiff Central station and catch the local rail service to Cathays station. Student ambassadors will be on-hand at Cardiff Central to direct you to the train to the University. Journey time from Cardiff Central to Cathays is only 5 minutes.

By bus

Destination: Cardiff University (Park Place) via Cardiff Central bus station if necessary

Some bus/coach services will stop outside the University on Park Place (Nearest bus stop). If yours does not, you can get a local bus (routes 53, 85 or 86) from the main bus station to the University.

By car (Park & Ride)

Destination: Park & Ride East, Junction 30 of the A48(M), CF23 8HH

Buses depart every 15 minutes and the journey time to the University on Park Place is around 20 minutes. Cost is £3 for parking and bus travel or £1 before 8:30 am.

By car (nearest car parks)

Destination: Dumfries Place NCP car park, CF10 3FN or North Road car park, CF10 3DY

There are a couple of car parks within walking distance of Park Place. The Dumfries Place NCP car park is £18 for the day and near the rest of the city centre. The North Road car park is £5 for the day and near Bute Park & the civic centre.

Coach parties

Destination: Museum Avenue, CF10 3AT

Coaches should approach the University along King Edward VII Avenue, turn into College Road and right into Museum Avenue where they can unload.

Students Union

CF10 serves up freshly cooked breakfast and lunch. Expect all your cafe favourites, as well as a great all day breakfast menu. The braver among you might want to take on the Super Mega Breakfast (not for the faint hearted!). CF10 Cafe also serves tea, coffee and cold drinks, and offers a take away service on food.

Grab something fast from our handy takeaway. Our famous Mediterranean wraps are packed with a delicious array of great tasting fillings freshly prepared daily and made to order by our friendly welcoming staff. Find us in the Ground Floor Mall opposite Cardiff Student Letting Agency.

The Main Building Restaurant is located on the ground floor of the Main Building. Hot and cold breakfast and lunch options are available. Lunch dishes range from a simple jacket potato with fillings to various popular main courses. Freshly made curries, fish dishes, pasta dishes and noodles and a healthy eating Salad Bar are also available.

Travel and parking

Open Day visitors with mobility difficulties should approach the University along Park Place, and park in the University’s Main Building Car Park. The postcode of Main Building for Sat Nav users is CF10 3AT.

If you are travelling to Cardiff by train/coach, and would like a taxi with wheelchair access for onward travel to the university, please telephone Capital Black Cabs on 029 20 777 777.

On arrival

Once you are at the university, you may wish to know that an accessible minibus is on-call throughout the day. To access this facility, please contact Angela Gough in the marquee reception in Main Building car park who will contact the driver for you. In addition, a limited number of wheelchairs are available for visitors from Main Building.

If you have any queries regarding provision for students with a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty, or access to grants and support, please visit the ‘Student Finance and Support’ drop-in shop in Main Building. You may prefer to visit this area in the afternoon should you wish to have a longer discussion with university staff.)
