UEB, 12 March 2018

• UEB received a verbal update on the industrial dispute.
• It was noted that the Vice-Chancellor and Professor Holford were meeting with the President, Secretary and one other member from the People and Planet student society today.
• It was noted that HEFCW had offered funding for a degree apprenticeship and a paper on degree apprenticeships for 2018/19 – 2020/21 would be coming to UEB next week.
• It was noted that the two capital proposals for HEFCW Research and Innovation capital funding (Institute of Coding and SETSquared Scale Up Programme initiatives) which had been approved by UEB last week had been successful.
• It was noted that the Vice-Chancellor had been part of a UUKi visit to Brussels that included a meeting with the Deputy Permanent Ambassador to the EU and the Vice-Chancellor would mention in his all-staff email later this month.
• UEB received the University’s draft HEFCW Fee and Access Plan. UEB agreed to delegate authority to the PVC for Student Experience and Academic Standards to make further changes to the Fee and Access Plan in preparation for its submission to Council.
• UEB received an update on the Welsh Language Standards and noted that the University had been granted an extended imposition deadline of 1 October 2018 to comply with certain Standards. UEB endorsed the annual monitoring report for approval by the Governance Committee and Council, prior to submission to the Welsh Language Commissioner.
• UEB received a summary of the key actions and progress towards implementation of the Bhugra Report recommendations, with further recommendations to maintain race equality initiatives long-term and affect significant sustainable cultural change across the University.
• UEB received a paper updating on European Structure Funds at Cardiff University including new bids in development.
• UEB received, and endorsed prior to its submission to Council, the University’s draft Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement. Once approved by Council the statement would be published in line with legal requirements.
• UEB received a paper on the Staff Speak Week that had taken place in February. It was agreed that a revised proposal for the format of the Staff Speak Week for next year would be brought back and would look at ways to improve staff (especially academic staff) engagement.
