  • It was noted that that the Vice-Chancellor had attended the GW4 Council; the Water Security Alliance was discussed and is seen as a model for further collaboration.
  • It was noted that the Schools of Medicine and Social Sciences had been successful in their applications to Athena SWAN and had both achieved a Bronze award.
  • A successful Varsity with Cardiff winning the Welsh Varsity Shield was noted.
  • It was noted that Professor Siladitya Bhattacharya takes up his post on 1 May as the Head of the School of Medicine.
  • It was noted that Professor Allemann, Professor Steve Bentley and Professor Sam Evans had visited China and had met with the President of Dalian University of Technology.
  • It was noted that Professor Roger Whitaker and Dr Pete Burnap had won a WEFO Data Innovation Accelerator Award.
  • It was noted that the Vice-Chancellor would be initiating an internal search for a new PVC Head of College Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • UEB received the academic promotions procedures for 2018/19. UEB endorsed the procedures which would now be considered by Senate.
  • UEB received an oral update from each member on their observations as champions for their assigned ED&I protected characteristic.
  • UEB received the 2017 Outstanding Contribution Award Scheme (OCAS) analysis and recommendations for 2018.
  • UEB received the draft response to the UK Department for Education review of post-18 education and funding: call for evidence. Subject to a minor amendment, the response was approved for submission.
  • UEB received a paper on achieving the AUA Mark of Excellence and delivering against the Technician Commitment. It was noted that the University had signed up to the AUA Mark of Excellence and the Technical Commitment in 2017, and that the draft action plan detailed how the University might move towards the AUA Mark of Excellence for the whole of the Professional Services and how the University could fulfil its obligations and commitment to deliver against the Technical Commitment.  The action plan was agreed and would also be included the People Strategy.
  • UEB received the draft three year cycle of committee meetings; it was agreed that the Chief Operating Officer would discuss with the Chair of Council reducing to a four meeting cycle of Council and the implications for sub-committees.
  • UEB received the schedule of UEB meetings for 2018/19 for note.
  • UEB received Estates Major Project update for Council for note.
  • UEB received the draft Council agenda for note.
  • UEB received a briefing on the University’s involvement with the Volvo Ocean Race 2018.
  • UEB received a briefing on the Welsh Labour leadership.
