Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) agreements

5 November 2019

Earlier this month I visited Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on behalf of the University to sign two strategic progression agreements.

XUMU is the sister campus of our Strategic Partner, Xiamen University. It opened in 2016 and is the first overseas campus by a premier Chinese institution. It currently has 5000 students with capacity to grow to 10,000 students. The University is located close to Kuala Lumpur airport and only 40 minutes from the city centre in a beautiful campus with impressive facilities.

The University is currently offering predominantly undergraduate courses although their masters and PhD provision is expanding.  All subjects in XMUM are taught in English apart from Chinese Studies and Traditional Chinese Medicine.  A third of the staff are seconded from their main China campus.

The agreements signed in Kuala Lumpur will allow students from XMUM to progress onto a range of postgraduate courses at Cardiff including Business, Journalism, Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering.

Building on our positive links with Xiamen University Cardiff is the first UK University to sign specific progression agreements of this kind with XMUM. A delegation from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences visited Kuala Lumpur in October 2018 and a delegation from the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering is planning a trip in early 2020.

Possible future areas of collaboration include International Relations, English, Communication and Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, New Energy and Physics. Summer School opportunities and exchanges for staff and students are also being explored.

We are looking forward to welcoming the President of XMUM, Prof Wang Ruifang, to Cardiff in early 2020, which will provide us with an opportunity to further strengthen our exciting partnership.
