href=\"https:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/education-development-toolkit\/theme-overview\/inclusivity\/universal-design-for-learning\/\">Universal Design for Learning (UDL)<\/a>. You will find a combination of text, video and images, along with some points for reflection, practical examples and case studies.<\/p>\n<p>You can choose to read the text or access an audio recording of the same material. The recordings are at the bottom of each page. Alternatively you could use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/use-immersive-reader-in-microsoft-edge-78a7a17d-52e1-47ee-b0ac-eff8539015e1\">the Microsoft Immersive Reader,<\/a>\u00a0which has the ability to set preferences or use the 'read aloud' function.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.cardiff.ac.uk\/staff\/training-and-development\/staff-courses-and-programmes\/events-and-training\/learning-and-teaching-cpd-2024-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You can also attend a workshop on the topic<\/a>.<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div> \n\n    \n<div class=\"accordion accordion-accessible\">\n<div class=\"accordion-section\">\n<h2>Providing learning that is authentic, meaningful and relevant by recognising the needs and perspectives of all learners, and designing for all<\/h2>\n<p>The Cardiff University Inclusive Education Enhancement Model has a series of key targets for enhancing design which draw on research and sector recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Enhancement Model Targets for Design:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning and assessment is student-centred and interactive, promoting on-going opportunities for students to make choices about the curriculum, teaching approaches and assessment practices.<\/li>\n<li>There are learning opportunities on all modules and assessments on the programme where students bring their own experiences to learning related to diversity and inclusion issues or local or international communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are two approaches which can enable us to develop inclusive education: Universal Design for Learning and Culturally-Sustaining Pedagogy.<\/p>\n<h2>Universal Design for Learning (UDL)<\/h2>\n<p>Moriarty (2016) suggests that the principles of UDL prompt institutions to embed anticipatory adjustments in the design of curricula that are flexible, adaptable to multiple forms of engagement and therefore facilitate all student learning. These anticipatory adjustments, by their very nature, apply to ALL students: \u2018What is essential for some students is beneficial for all\u2019.<\/p>\n \n\n                        <div      <h3>The student perspective on UDL<\/h3>                <p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2018While I don't think that it was implemented equally across different modules\/degree programmes, I feel that many of my lecturers made an effort to implement the Universal Design for Learning principles in their teaching. For the most part, curricula and its delivery were flexible and adaptable to the specific needs of the students in the room. Also, while some lecturers did so more than others, there was guidance around assessment criteria, which included some overview of key terminology that is used in relation to assessments\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Cardiff University student, 2025<\/p>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div> \n\n    \n<h2>Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy<\/h2>\n<p>The students in our classrooms arrive with a diverse set of learning needs and a range of cultural experiences and identities. Learning must be looked at within the context and the culture in which they occur. Culture has been defined in many ways, for example, \u2018shared patterns of behaviours and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization. These shared patterns identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group\u2019 (Hanesworth et al. 2019: 1)<\/p>\n<p>Multiple levels of awareness are necessary for teachers to be culturally responsive. This includes knowledge of personal biases, students\u2019 backgrounds\/strengths, how the learning environment should build from students\u2019 strengths; and how to bring about change in education systems.<\/p>\n<p>Instructional planning using UDL is further enhanced when acknowledging how race, cultural, and linguistic differences could affect students\u2019 learning (Kieran and Anderson 2019). The new Universal Design for Learning guidelines (2024), version 3.0, incorporate culturally sustaining pedagogies.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about these concepts on the <a State Learning Objectives at the beginning of the lecture or seminar so students know what the lecture or session is about.<\/p>\n<p>2. Give a summary of the seminar reading or questions you want the students to consider. It makes it explicit as to what we are expected to do and helps us focus on what is needed.<\/p>\n<p>3. Be open and flexible in your teaching approach. No matter how much preparation you do in advance of teaching a session, you never know what the specific needs of the students will be in that particular session. Try to build a picture\/profile of the students as you encounter them more frequently, but don\u2019t go into a session believing that there is only one right way to lead that session.
