An audience with Richard Parks, international rugby player and global adventurer

30/11/2017, 17:30 - 18:30

Beyond the Horizon

At the age of thirty-one, Richard Parks lay in an empty room at the back of the house his parents were renting. The successful rugby career that had dominated his adult life had just been finished by a shoulder injury. Devastated, he could see no future for himself.

This line from his grandmother’s funeral, which he’d had tattooed on the inside of his arm, inspired him to emerge. After twenty-one days of solitude, he stepped out of the white room and threw himself into a new life in the dazzling, wide-open spaces of mountains and wilderness.

Within two years, he had become the first person in history to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents and ski to the North and South Poles in the same calendar year, completing the feat in less than 7 months.

As a Cardiff University alumnus, Richard is now one of the world’s leading extreme environment athletes, having previously been a Welsh international rugby player.

His pioneering expeditions and projects have pushed the boundaries of human performance whilst each having a social or charitable impact.

Richard has been identified as one of Britain’s most promising leaders in his selection for the inaugural Franco-British Young Leaders Programme pioneered by the British and French governments. He is a Sport Wales Board Member, award-winning author, BAFTA nominated television presenter, Visit Wales ambassador and his twitter handle reads; “Fastest Briton to ski to the South Pole yet always late!”.

When he’s not flying his Welsh flag in the furthest corners of our planet, he loves cycling, coffee, cooking and movies with his family and friends.

Be surprised, entertained and inspired by Richard’s unique story of overcoming adversity, astonishing endurance and vulnerability.

Richard will be signing his book Beyond the Horizon which won the Cross Sports Book Award in 2015 for Best Rugby Book and chatting to attendees after his talk. If you’d like to know more about Richard’s captivating journey or share it with a friend, you will have the opportunity to purchase his book at a reduced cost of £10 (cash only purchases). Pick up a copy or have yours signed on the night!
