Everyone is invited to join Cardiff University in celebrating the latest developments in the detection of gravitational waves.
Following the end of the second observing run, and the recent award of the Nobel Prize for Physics, we present the latest results from gravitational waves, including those due to be presented on Monday 16th October 2017.
On Friday 20th October, join us for a series of talks and a drinks reception. Talks will be given by members of the research team as well as external collaborators who use the LIGO/Virgo data and results.
On 3rd October the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish, all of the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration, “for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves”. This is a field in which Cardiff have been working for over three decades, and the gravitational physics team are delighted to see this recognition.
The very exciting second observing run of LIGO included multiple detections of gravitational waves. The inclusion of the recently commissioned Virgo detector also greatly increases the ability to localise the sources in the sky and learn more about them.
In September 2015 the Advanved LIGO detectors made the first ever detection of gravitational waves from a pair of black holes spiralling towards each other and merging. Since then, a number of further detections have been made, and the Advanced Virgo detector has joined the search, allowing the first detection by three detectors in August 2017.

Talks should be suitable for age 12+. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
