Welsh Voices: Part I – Cardiff University Contemporary Music Group
12/12/2017, 19:00 - 21:00
Free entry. All are welcome.
Cardiff University’s Contemporary Music Group has been exploring the music of living Welsh composers since 2014. The Group has performed full concerts devoted to this repertoire, and individual works have been included in other concert programmes. In the 2017-18 academic year this project will come to fruition, with two concerts of recent music by Welsh composers and the recording of a CD to be released in 2018.
Vocal music provides the focus of this year’s concerts, with CMG’s Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Dr Robert Fokkens. Soloists drawn from CMG will perform the majority of works in both concerts and recording. Instrumental chamber works will also be included in the concerts, providing context and counterpoint to the vocal music. In addition to the works of living composers, we will pay tribute to two recently deceased figures central to contemporary music in Wales, Peter Reynolds and Mervyn Burtch, by performing their compositions.
A broad range of composers will be explored, from fully established, nationally recognised composers including John Metcalf, Charlie Barber and Lynne Plowman, to a number of younger figures currently working in Wales and beyond. The programmes will represent the breadth of creative musical activity in Wales today, and the CD recording will be an important addition to the discography of new music from Wales.
This concert is part of the 2017/18 concert series at the School of Music.
