“What is truth?”: Is undeclared bias in the media contributing to global insecurity?
23/11/2017, 18:00 - 20:00
Concern about a “post-truth” world has escalated in the last 18 months with the rise of populist movements which lean on “alternative facts” and decry previously trusted sources of information as “fake news”. Trust in media and politics has fallen as confusion about public information and discourse has grown. How real is this phenomena, how much does it matter and are the media to blame – or are they the answer?
Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC) is a world leading research department and Britain’s oldest journalism school. Two of the School’s leading academics, Professor Richard Sambrook and Professor Justin Lewis, will discuss these questions and offer their thoughts on the answers. Following the presentations, the audience will be able to pose questions to our speakers and guest panellist, Martin Lewis (PGDip 1998, Hon 2017), founder of moneysavingexpert.com.
The event is open to Cardiff’s alumni, friends and supporters and is free to attend. There will be a networking drinks reception before and after the presentations and panel question and answer session.
