Society<\/em>, Vol. 20, 00, 000-000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abstract: The paper which marks the beginning of the program known as `The Third Wave of Science Studies\u2019 was published in 2002 (Collins and Evans, 2002).\u00a0 It was intended to be a small incremental contribution to Science and Technology Studies (STS) but, to the authors\u2019 surprise, it engendered a great deal of opposition and adverse comment.\u00a0 In a perverse way this may turn out to have been a good thing as it forced the authors to devote much more effort to explaining and developing the program so as to counter their critics.\u00a0 Whatever the reasons, in its seven years since publication the paper has been by a factor of three or four the most cited paper in the journal <em>Social Studies of Science<\/em> and is now the second-most cited paper in that journal\u2019s 38-year history.\u00a0 It has also attracted a growing group who do research and analysis based on the original ideas and those worked out in the subsequent publications including the book entitled <em>Rethinking Expertise<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/japan-paper.doc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-81\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/Word-icon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/Word-icon.png 256w, https:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/Word-icon-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 30px) 100vw, 30px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/japan-paper.doc\">Download full extract<\/a>\u00a0[182 KB]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Envoi<\/h1>\n<p><em>Being an extract from the final substantive chapter of:<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Collins, Harry, (2010 forthcoming)<\/strong> <em><strong>Gravity\u2019s Ghost: The Equinox Event and Science in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century<\/strong><\/em><strong>, Chicago: University of Chicago Press<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abstract: The state of science in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century is considered and a division is made between those characteristics that are `derived\u2019 from other cultural institutions \u2013 such as hero-worship, the worship of obscure texts, a religious anti-religionism, and an adherence to capitalism \u2013 and those which enable science to give leadership because of its special qualities.\u00a0 This division is related to that required for an elective modernism.\u00a0 Science, if it were describe itself\u00a0 as a gradual and fallible uncovering, rather a series of point discoveries, could give leadership in the right way to make difficult, technologically-related, judgments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/envoiextract.doc\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-81\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/Word-icon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"30\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/Word-icon.png 256w, https:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/Word-icon-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 30px) 100vw, 30px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.cardiff.ac.uk\/harrycollins\/files\/2016\/02\/envoiextract.doc\">Download full extract<\/a>\u00a0[59 KB]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Third Wave of Science Studies: Developments and Politics Collins, Harry 2011 forthcoming. `The Third Wave of Science Studies: Developments and Politics\u2019 Japan Journal for Science, Technology &amp;
