Global Citizenship Education

Global Citizenship Education involves nurturing respect for all, building a sense of belonging to common humanity and helping learners become responsible and active global citizens. It is a form of civic learning that involves students’ active participation in projects that address global issues of a social, political, economic or environmental nature.

Learning outcomes

Global awareness and cultural competence – identify and analyse key global challenges and develop an appreciation for cultural diversity and how cultural differences impact global interactions.

Global citizenship values and social responsibility – identify and articulate the values associated with being a responsible global citizen and recognise the role of individuals and organisations in addressing global challenges, promoting social responsibility and making ethically-informed decisions.

Sustainability and environmental stewardship – recognise the importance of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship on a global scale.

Community engagement – Participate in community engagement activities with a global focus, either locally or internationally and understand the importance of such initiatives in addressing global challenges.

Curricular activity examples

  • Global awareness projects based on live briefs and/or historic case studies.
  • Role-play or simulation exercises e.g., a simulated Model United Nations conference
  • Global collaboration projects with students from other universities or countries
  • Cultural Exchange Programmes with institutions in different countries
  • Prototype development and/or exhibition/demonstration production.
    Work or study year abroad via the Global Opportunities Team
  • Community service projects
  • Group debates or discussions
