  • UEB received a report written by Professor John Goddard, University of Newcastle, on Cardiff University’s innovation and engagement activity which had been commissioned by the Vice-Chancellor to help inform the next iteration of the strategy.
  • It was noted that the Celebrating Excellence Awards event was taking place on 17 November 2016 and Ms Dowden was hosting the event. There are a number of high profile events taking place on the same evening including the launch of the strategic partnership with Xiamen University and a public lecture by Laura Tenison. It was noted that the Communication and Marketing Department were working on an events calendar to avoid clashing events and to enable UEB representation at events to be co-ordinated.
  • It was noted that the front page of South Wales Echo carried the headline that planning permission had been granted for the two new innovation buildings.
  • It was noted that ‘Project Search’ had been launched successful. Project Search is an international project providing employment and learning opportunities for young people with disabilities, with the University was providing twelve internships.
  • It was noted with great sadness, the death of the former Vice-Chancellor, Sir Aubrey Trotman-Dickenson, a key figure in the development of the University and architect of the UWIST/UCC merger; as Vice-Chancellor he laid the strong foundations of today’s University and his contributions were remembered.
  • It was noted that the complete TEF submission, being the metrics book accompanied by a narrative document, was due for submission on 26 January 2017. The narrative should be evidence based and Universities Wales had the opportunity to submit information outlining the Welsh context; institutions could provide additional evidence on excellence based on fact not intent.
  • UEB received the University’s written response to the review conducted by Professor Graeme Reid on industrial income which would accompany the submission of Professor Reid’s report to Council on 28 November 2016.
  • UEB received the institution’s response to the Students’ Written Submission. It was agreed, with minor amendments, the response be shared with the Students’ Union President ahead of Council receiving the submission.
  • UEB received the updated London Economics report on Cardiff University’s social and economic impact report using 2014/15 data.
  • UEB received the HEFCW Consultation: Developing a higher education strategy for Wales.
