  • The welcome progress on phase one of the exit negotiations on important issues for universities including securing residency rights of EU citizens living in the UK and the UK’s continuation in existing EU programmes including Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ until 2020 was noted.
  • It was noted that Professor Justin Lewis (Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management) and Professor David James (Education) had been announced as Research Excellence Framework (REF) sub-panel chairs.
  • The recent visit from the Minister of State for Immigration, Brandon Lewis MP, was noted. He had a met with Professor Boyne, Professor Holford and students from the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
  • UEB received a paper outlining the key points arising from ‘REF 2021: decisions on staff and outputs’, published by the HEFCE REF team.
  • UEB received a paper outlining the key points from the UK Government’s new Industrial Strategy.
  • UEB received and noted the six monthly paper on joint working with NHS organisation in Wales.
  • UEB received the six monthly safety and staff well-being update and agreed to endorse the inclusion of wellbeing in the overarching University Safety, Health and Environment Policy Statement.
