Further local coronavirus restrictions

25 September 2020

Dear colleague,

We have been advised by Welsh Government that Cardiff will be subject to further coronavirus restrictions. As a result, new measures will come into force from 18.00 on 27 September 2020.

They are designed to protect people’s health and restrict the spread of the virus. As a part of the local community, we all have a role to play in supporting these exceptional measures.

Immediate implications of the new restrictions

The further restrictions have been introduced following an increase in the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) locally. More information on the measures are available on the Welsh government website.

We will provide regular updates as the situation develops, and remain in constant contact with Welsh Government, local Councils and Public Health Wales. At this stage we can confirm the following:

  • Educational settings, including universities, will remain open and classes can take place. Research facilities will also remain open and accessible until further notice.
  • If you are symptom free (and not subject to self-isolation) you can still travel to our campus for work, including teaching and research (where previously agreed with your line manager).

Supporting one another

This decision has been taken by Welsh Government in the interests of public health. We expect all our staff (and students) to comply with the further restrictions, and wider guidance in place. This expectation is a key part of our community commitment.

I and my fellow members of the University Executive Board of course recognise this may cause additional alarm and/or inconvenience, and you can access information, resources and support helplines to support you during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

We will keep the position under review, and I will be back in contact as and when there are further developments.

With best wishes

Colin Riordan
