Day 5: Independent worm saloon

We arrived back to Furnas tired but happy….to find that the transplantation team were still in action. They had mapped the transplantation site, the end of a garden owned by a relative of a team, and found that the temperature and carbon dioxide levels ranged from 30oC to 50oC and 10% to 50%….think about having those conditions at the bottom of your garden.

But they had selected 6 pairs of sites all with temperature of about 32oC and carbon dioxide level of 8-12% (surface)…enough to kill us in short order.

They then constructed the mesocosums or as they are now being named “Independent worm saloons” – thanks Mike and David for the pop trivia.

But the constructions were elegant…see pictures and more to follow when I can get at Marta’s camera.

A tired but very happy crew retreated for food and a well earned rest…..just one more day in the field.
