London-JFK JFK-Georgetown
They should warn you that a 4 pm transatlantic flight is the worst time to fly if you are connecting to another long connection. At the start, it is too early to sleep and there is always a few good movies you missed at the cinema but when these are done and you’re settling down to sleep, they serve you food and wake you up for landing. Things are not helped when with ESTA in hand you are met by a hour+ queue for immigration and that’s just for transit. However, with a 5 hour connection time late on a Sunday evening, you may anticipate a quiet airport but no, JFK is full of life. The queue for Caribbean air lines is packed with people loaded high with their life possessions. Well, one thing about a long connection you can relax and let nothing stress you…well you could if your body didn’t think it was 3am and just wanted to sleep.
But amazing what a Big Mac in USA can do for the spirits. Then the flights south into the Dawn and waking up to the jungle. The glimpse of green through the tropical clouds really sets the scene for an amazing trip. The airport is small but highly effective- and before I know I have been whisked away by Dr Elford Liverpool (Head of Biology) at University of Guyana and Rashima the master’s student who will be accompanying us on our sampling trip.
