Morfydd Owen Threnody for the Passing of Branwen

We were particularly proud to be able to bring the music of Morfydd Owen to new audiences. Born in South Wales, Owen studied music at Cardiff University. She went on to establish herself in London musical life both as a composer and as a mezzo-soprano, but what promised to be a brilliant career was tragically cut short by her death in 1918 at the age of 26.

Threnody for the Passing of Branwen was written in 1916 for a stage work almost certainly inspired by an episode in the Mabinogion (a collection of tales considered the Welsh medieval masterpiece) in which the Princess Branwen dies of a broken heart.
