Cathays High School Visit 20th February 2025
5 March 2025
The day began with the “Medieval Society” workshop, where Year 7 learnt about the lives of knights, monks and peasants. As budding young knights, pupils designed their own heraldic shields whilst learning about the route to knighthood and what the job entailed. They enhanced their investigative skills by decoding a monastery map and learning about the different job roles of monks by following visual and verbal clues. No Medieval session would be complete without the immersive role play game, Exploring the Life of a Medieval Farmer; where pupils lived a year as a peasant.
After lunch, Year 8 explored the life of the Jones family in “Turn of the Century Wales” by creating a family tree from sources such as census data and registration certificates. Pupils then switched their focus to one individual in the Jones family; learning about their lives through photographs, newspaper clippings, post cards and artefacts. Finally, a proposal for a museum exhibition was created followed by a class presentation.
We had some fantastic feedback from pupils: “The staff were very kind and helpful”; “I like the information they shared”; “I enjoyed the dice game because it appears to be fun to learn…”
Thank you to volunteers Eddie, Kallan Isabelle and Katie for excellent session delivery, and thank you to the staff at Cathays High for welcoming us into their school!
