Future Scholars event (07 Mar 2014)
7 May 2014Today members of the SHARE with Schools team ran the School of History, Archaeology and Religion’s (SHARE) pupil sessions for the Future Scholars Award event at Cardiff University today. These are events designed to typically provide, amongst other things:
- Taster lectures or seminars, designed to catch the interest of high achieving year 9 students and show what university level study involves.
- The opportunity to meet current students and staff.
- Tours of the university.
Pupils will gain a real life experience of what studying at university is like. It is hoped that this will encourage them to aim high to achieve the best grades possible, and to seriously consider applying to university – including selective universities.
We agreed to run two parallel sessions, of about 25 pupils each, using our hands-on Roman and C19th archaeology collections to discuss what sorts of things we do here at research-intensive SHARE. Big thanks to Undergraduate students Shannon Phillips and Beth Cox for helping the Postgraduate Coordinators to run the sessions at what is a very busy time for essays and exams.
More than 2300 Year 9 pupils will be visiting a Russell Group university in the next few months with #FutureScholars Awards programme.
