Primary School Graduation Event – 26/06/24

8 July 2024
Small clay cylinder seals and large cardboard models of cylinder seals displayed on a table with a red table cloth.

It was a pleasure to be a part of the Cardiff University Primary School Graduation event this year, in partnership with Cardiff Councils Passport to the City. Taking place in the new Centre for Student life building, Year 5 and 6 pupils from local primary schools took part in a range of exciting activities delivered by departments across the university.

At the SHARE with Schools stand, pupils learned about how people in ancient Mesopotamia used and carried their own cylinder seals. These were small stamp impressions that were used to authenticate correspondence – a bit like a signature today. Pupils then got to create their own cylinder seal out of clay, thinking about what images they would use to represent their identity. Some brilliant designs were produced, including pictures of people’s pets, floral patterns, and even their favourite video games! This activity is part of our new Mesopotamian Society workshop being developed as a result of funding from the Classical Association.

Thank you very much to the organisers for running such a fantastic event!
