Teaching Approaches

In this section of the toolkit, you will find pages to support you with the practical realities of teaching, with a range of resources, strategies and approaches to teaching. Using a wide range of teaching approaches supports you in implementing Universal Design for Learning, as a variety of techniques can help your diverse learners learn in a way that suits their characteristics, skills and talents.

WALES NEWS SERVICE

It aligns with the PSF 2024 in consideration of A2: teach and/or support learning, K2: approaches to teaching and/or supporting learning, K4 digital and/or other technologies, V1: Respecting individual learners and groups of learners, and V2: promoting engagement in learning and equity of opportunity, and the overall requirements for demonstration of ‘Effective and inclusive practice’.

It supports the Cardiff University Strategy ‘Our Future, Together’ in supporting ‘an excellent educational experience for students of all backgrounds’ and the strategic priority of Culture, Cynefin and Community.

Structure

You can firstly consider the key considerations for ‘Inclusive Teaching Approaches’, before reading about the wide array of potential teaching approaches you might use in your practice, in the Xerte on our ‘Inclusive teaching approaches for engagement and learning’ page.

The Learning Design page on Effective Flipped Learning help you further consider your approach to blended learning. The final Key Teaching Approaches page considers some topical approaches to empathetic pedagogy, play and games in your teaching.

Further Learning

You will also find the themes that should underpin successful teaching approaches (inclusivity, employability and sustainability) in the first section of the toolkit.

For Cardiff University staff: you can develop your understanding of teaching approaches, by engaging with our related ‘Teaching Appraoches’ workshops, which are listed on the CPD Programme intranet page. These workshops are available asynchronously, to take in your own time, and can be followed by a live workshop (with enough demand), a 1:1 meeting with the lead, or a bespoke workshop for your team or School to discuss application to your practice. Find out more on the Cardiff LTA CPD page.
