Assessment and Feedback for Learning
In this section of the toolkit, you will find pages to support you with your design and practice of assessment and feedback for learning and teaching, whether at a programme, module or session level. Good design is required to ensure all students can demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding, to meet their potential.

This theme is linked to the PSF 2024 in consideration of A3: assess and give feedback for learning, V1: Respecting individual learners and groups of learners, and V2: promoting engagement in learning and equity of opportunity, K1 how learners learn, and the overall requirements for demonstration of ‘Effective and inclusive practice’, and A3: Assess and give feedback to learners.
It supports the Cardiff University Strategy ‘Our Future, Together’ in supporting ‘an excellent educational experience for students of all backgrounds’ and the strategic priority of Culture, Cynefin and Community.
Structure
You can read about our approach to digital learning design on our first section, Learning Design for Assessment and feedback, which also covers preparing and running assessments.
You can then delve deeper into supporting students, by considering with assessment and feedback literacy by considering inclusivity for your diverse students, by delivering inclusive assessment and feedback.
For those involved or interested in the development of a Programme, read more on the Programme-level Design of Assessment section. This includes the programme-level approach, the Cardiff University EAT framework, Generative AI and programme-level assessment, and developing assessment criteria.
The final section addresses Approaches to Assessment, and covers co-creation in assessment, authentic assessment, and teamwork as an assessment tool, before we consider the large array of individual assessment methods and their different affordances for inclusivity and for effective and inclusive practice.
Further Learning
You will also find the themes that should underpin successful assessment and feedback for learning and teaching (inclusivity, employability and sustainability) in the first section of the toolkit.
For Cardiff University staff: you can develop your understanding of assessment and feedback, by engaging with our related workshops, which are listed on the CPD Programme intranet page. These workshops are available asynchronously, to take in your own time, and can be followed by a live workshop (with enough demand), a 1:1 meeting with the lead, or a bespoke workshop for your team or School to discuss application to your practice. Find out more on the Cardiff LTA CPD page.
