The contents include four essays on interlinked subjects: a reconsideration of Henry Vaughan’s last poetic collection, Thalia Rediviva; the sacred and profane poetry of his contemporary, Robert Herrick; metaphorical and therapeutic music in Vaughan’s writing; and the turbulent history of the Vaughans’ Usk Valley in the mid-seventeenth century. These articles are interspersed with forty new poems in the ‘metaphysical tradition’ by living writers hailing from places as far afield as California, Michigan, New York, Trinidad, Wales, Northern Ireland and Essex. The essays and poems are preceded by an obituary of Jeremy Hooker, poet, critic and frequent contributor to Scintilla, and the issue concludes, appropriately, with a review of Hooker’s final book, Addiction: A Love Story.
Scintilla 28 has been edited by Simon Jackson, with the assistance of the poetry editors, Katherine Stansfield and Damion Walford Davies, and it is beautifully illustrated with delicate studies by Welsh nature artist, Rachel Porter.
